What is the difference between the Skip Hop Forma and Forma Next, and which one should I choose?

The Forma Next is the updated second generation of Skip Hop's most popular nappy bag, and the differences are meaningful enough to warrant the upgrade for many parents. The most significant change is the bottle pocket: the Forma Next features a new adjustable bottle pocket that expands to fit large water bottles and tumblers with handles up to 40oz — a direct response to how many parents carry a large insulated cup alongside baby's bottles, which the original Forma's fixed side pockets couldn't accommodate. The second meaningful upgrade is the back panel: the Forma Next includes a padded mesh back panel for breathability a noticeable improvement over the original's solid back, particularly for outdoor summer carrying in Australian heat. The Forma Next also includes a luggage sleeve on the back that slides over a suitcase handle the original Forma does not have this, making the Next a meaningfully better travel companion. Both bags include two packing cubes, a changing mat, stroller straps, and a padded laptop pocket. The Forma Next has 9 pockets in total compared to the original's 7. If you are buying your first Forma, the Next is the better purchase the bottle pocket flexibility and breathable back alone justify the price difference for most NZ parents. If you already own the original Forma and are happy with it, the upgrade is worth it primarily if you carry a large water tumbler daily or if back-of-carrier heat is something you've noticed

Is the Skip Hop Forma Next waterproof, and how does it hold up to the New Zealand climate?

The Forma Next is made from durable, water-repellent fabric which means it resists light rain, surface moisture, and the inevitable spills that come with daily parent life, without soaking through immediately. The distinction between water-repellent and fully waterproof is worth understanding: water-repellent fabric causes water to bead and run off the surface rather than absorbing it, providing strong protection in light to moderate rain and against splashes. It is not submersion-proof — if you set it down in a puddle or leave it in heavy sustained rain without a cover, water will eventually penetrate. For the reality of daily parenting afternoon downpours, humidity, or four-seasons-in-a-day weather the water-repellent finish handles what parents actually encounter. The insulated bottle pockets keep condensation from wet bottles contained rather than soaking through to other contents. The two included packing cubes provide an additional layer of organisation that separates potentially wet or damp items a wet swimsuit, a soiled outfit in a nappy bag from clean and dry contents. For parents who regularly face heavy rain, keeping a lightweight dry bag inside for wet items is the most practical additional step
