FAQs
From what age can I use the Skip Hop Play Gyms, and when will my baby outgrow it?
Skip Hop Play Gym's are suitable from birth. From the first weeks, newborns benefit from lying beneath the overhead toys and tracking the high-contrast colours and gentle movement, visual tracking is one of the earliest and most important forms of sensory development, and Skip Hop gym's supports it from day one. The oversized mat offers cushioned comfort and multiple textures for sensory development, and the plush pillow provides supportive tummy time positioning at a comfortable incline for newborns who still find completely flat tummy time challenging. As baby develops typically from around 6–8 weeks they begin batting at the hanging toys, which builds arm coordination and reinforces cause-and-effect understanding. From around 4–5 months, reaching and grasping becomes the dominant mode of play. The gym transitions through multiple configurations overhead play, tummy time, and seated play meaning it does not become obsolete when your baby can hold their head up and shift position independently. Most babies continue to use a play gym actively to around 8–10 months, due to the multiple modes and repositionable toys gives it a longer active life than single-position gyms that are outgrown by 4–5 months
How do I use the Skip Hop Play Gym's for tummy time, and when should I start?
Tummy time is one of the most important activities in your baby's first months it builds the neck, shoulder, and core strength needed for rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking but many babies resist it initially because lying flat on their tummy is hard work when your muscles are still developing. Skip Hop Play Gym's makes tummy time significantly more accessible for both baby and parent. The plush pillow provides supportive tummy time positioning place baby's chest over the pillow so their upper body is elevated at a gentle angle, which reduces the effort required to lift the head and makes the experience more comfortable than flat tummy time on a firm surface. In this position, the overhead hanging toys sit within baby's eyeline, giving them visual motivation to lift their head and look up which is the exact movement tummy time is designed to strengthen. Start tummy time from birth for very short sessions even 1–2 minutes several times a day and build gradually as your baby's tolerance increases. The Academy of Pediatrics recommends working toward a total of 30 minutes of tummy time per day by 3 months. Place the toys low on the arches during tummy time sessions to encourage baby to lift their head and reach forward, turning a strength exercise into engaged, motivated play. Never leave baby unattended during tummy time, and always place them on their back to sleep
Should I choose the Skip Hop Play Gym or the Discoverosity Activity Gym — what's the difference?
This is one of the most searched comparison questions among Australian parents choosing between the two Skip Hop gym ranges, and the honest answer is that they serve different parenting philosophies rather than different budgets. Skip Hop Gym's are the higher-stimulation option: featuring over 17 developmental activities including a musical toy, light-up plush, squeaker with ribbons, rattle, and often a baby mirror — covering lights, music, and varied textures across a bright, themed aesthetic. It is the gym for parents who want maximum sensory engagement and interactive features from day one. The Discoverosity is the calmer, more considered option: it was designed in direct collaboration with experts in Montessori education, with an intentional balance of calming simplicity and sensory engagement to nurture baby's natural curiosity and support self-directed activity. The arches are made from FSC-certified sustainably sourced wood, the mat is made from OEKO-TEX certified fabric, and the toys feature contrasting patterns, a baby mirror, crinkle sounds, and natural textures rather than lights or music. It is the gym for parents seeking a low-stimulation, natural-material aesthetic that aligns with a Montessori or conscious parenting approach. Both are suitable from birth, both are BPA-free and flame-retardant free, and both support the same core play positions. The choice comes down to whether you want your baby's play environment to be bright and stimulating or calm and exploratory — neither is wrong, and both are genuinely excellent products
